What is Emergency Contraception? Can I get it at the Women's Health Care Clinic?

Often called the "morning-after pill," emergency contraception (EC), or Plan B®, can reduce the risk of pregnancy up to 3-5 days after unprotected intercourse or if your condom breaks during sex.

Keep in mind, EC is more effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse! So the sooner you take it, the better!

Primarily, EC keeps a woman from getting pregnant by delaying ovulation, or stopping the ovary from releasing an egg that can be fertilized.

EC does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections, nor does it cause an abortion if you are already pregnant.

You do not need an appointment at the Clinic to receive Plan B®, you can simply walk in if you need it.

If the clinic is closed (on the weekends), contact your local pharmacy about getting EC over-the-counter, or come into the Clinic as soon as we open.

If you are over 18 years old, you can purchase Plan B® at a pharmacy without a prescription, which generally costs $40-60 plus tax.
